Work for a Writers Guild East Signatory Company

WGAE
January 01, 2007

There are all kinds of contracts and many different ways to be covered by a Writers Guild contract.
Screen and Television

If you write for screen or television, may be hired by a studio, network or production company that is already a signatory to the Guild. To find out, call the Signatory Department at (212) 767-7837.

However, if the company you are working for is not a signatory, then there is a solution. Contact the WGAE Signatory Department and ask them to send a signatory application to the primary company contact. You'll need to provide:

  • Name of Company
  • Company Contact, Address and Phone Number

Aside from this initial contact, the writer does not usually get involved, as all conversations are directly between the company and the Writers Guild.

Once eligibility is established and the signatory company approved, the writer will get a WGAE contract covering the terms and services of their work. If you don't hear anything, it's generally a good idea to call the Signatory Department and follow up on the status of the company's application.

Staff News Writers

If you work as a staff news writer, most of the major network newsrooms are within the Writers Guild's jurisdiction and therefore signatory. When you are hired, the company provides the WGAE Membership Department with a Notice of Hire.

The Membership Department then mails you an application. New hires join the Guild within 30 days of their date of hire, so don't delay in filling out your application!

We're here to help should you have any questions. You can give the Membership Department a call at (212) 767-7824 or walk in to our offices at 555 West 57th Street, 12th floor, and complete an application anytime during the work week between 9:30 am - 5:30 pm.
